Career Highlights

I taught bilingual special education in New Mexico for six years before earning my doctorate degree. I have taught educational research, critical pedagogy, multicultural education, bilingual education, and socio-political education at New Mexico State University, University of Texas at El Paso, Southern Illinois University, and Eastern Oregon University prior to coming to Southern Oregon University. I have been overseeing the ESOL Endorsement program at SOU since 2000 and also teach in the SPED program.

What do you want students to take away from your classes?

I hope students learn how to read and understand research in order to develop their own research and use findings to support their educational needs.

How long have you been teaching online courses?

Approximately 21 years.

Why did you start teaching?

I liked the idea of helping underrepresented populations.

What is the value of a master's degree in education?

It can be a significant advantage for bettering oneself and for acquiring employment.

What advice would you give to those considering an online MSEd program?

Don't get frustrated – stick with it. It is sometimes difficult to be able to tell if you are progressing at the rate you might want. Stay on track and it will pay off in more ways than one.
