Career Highlights:

My career journey started as a player and coach in college football and rugby in Los Angeles, turned toward network sports television at ABC in New York City, developed in Hawaii as a high school teacher of science and English, and landed in Oregon as a college professor in the School of Education for the last 18 years. As a high school teacher in Hawaii, I developed an integrated hydroponic vegetable and aquaculture program that was a statewide model for at-risk youth.

My published work in academic journals and edited volumes is primarily in areas of educational technology, studying the use of slow-motion animation and multimedia to explain science concepts, and exploring the use of repeated listening methods with audiobooks to improve reading fluency and comprehension.

What do you want students to take away from your classes?
I want students to learn that each person holds the potential to make the world a better place. Everyone has ideas, but many lack the skills and fortitude it takes to persist when challenges arise. Learning to engage in a process of inquiry and problem-solving leads to solutions that improve people’s lives. Students should understand that in the short run they are the learners, but in the long run they become the leaders to inspire others to change the world.
How long have you been teaching online courses?
15 years.
Why did you start teaching?
Although I received my secondary level teaching credential right out of college, I worked in several professions, such as construction, sports television, and real estate that didn't take advantage of my training. However, a position in Hawaii teaching science and English to at-risk students was available, and it offered me an opportunity to use my life experiences to the students' advantage. I realized that a hands-on project-based curriculum could be significant inspiration to students who were disheartened about traditional learning in school. I'm confident it changed their lives for the better, and it changed my life as well.
What is the value of a master's degree in education?
A master's degree gives a person the opportunity to explore personal and professional interests in a deeper manner than undergraduate work. A master's degree challenges a person to think critically and gives a person resources and skills to pursue their own goals in education.
What advice would you give to those considering an online MSEd program?

Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know.
I lived off the grid on the Big Island of Hawaii for 11 years, living in an ocean view home powered by solar panels and backup generator. Also, I was one of two Americans selected to an international all-star rugby team touring South Africa in 1979!
