Paula Lynam, Instructor

SOU Faculty

"I would encourage students to cultivate a personal connection to the study material, fully engage in the assignments while incorporating nature into their regular self-care and reflective practice."

Degrees Held:

MEd – Southern Oregon University, 2013

Career Highlights:

I have over 30 years of experience working with children of all ages, families, and educators to protect childhood innocence, cultivate holistic practices, and to nurture connection and creativity.

  • What do you want students to take away from your classes?

It is important to me that students complete my classes feeling more curious, inspired, self-aware, and confident in their work. I feel most satisfied when students take the material we study, make it their own, and incorporate any of the reflective, creative, and nature-aware practices into their daily lives.

  • How long have you been teaching online courses?

    Six years.

  • Why did you start teaching?

I am most interested in supporting the cultivation of holistic qualities and practices among those working with children and families, which is what led me to teaching at SOU.

  • What is the value of a master's degree in education?

To me, a master's degree in education offers those interested in affecting positive change a high level of credibility and a means to enliven their purpose and to activate their individual curiosity and creativity.

  • What advice would you give to those considering an online MSEd program?

I would encourage students to cultivate a personal connection to the study material, fully engage in the assignments while incorporating nature into their regular self-care and reflective practice.

  • What is the one book you think everyone should read?

Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know.

I was born and grew up in Zimbabwe, which deeply influenced the way I view early childhood education environments, curriculum, and teaching. It is because of my close connection to nature and experiences growing up that my perspective of holistic practices in education have unfurled.
